In a video posted to Instagram, Stause gave her followers a mini crash course on gender, sexuality, and attraction, saying, “Everyone is different, but for [G Flip], they really feel like they are a mix, and they identify on both sides of male, female. That’s one of those things I personally find such a beautiful mix, and I think it’s probably why we did connect on such a deep level so quickly.” I don’t know much—okay, anything—about Stause and G Flip’s lives, but I enthusiastically cosign the message of encouraging your partner (or anyone in your life, really) to express themselves and explore their gender presentation in whatever way feels good for them.

While I’m wary of touting Stause’s statement too much (because acknowledging and respecting your partner’s identity should be…a fairly nonnegotiable part of dating!), I have to admit that I like the frankness and security she’s bringing to a conversation about her and her partner’s personal sexualities and gender identities. What I really love about Stause and G Flip’s relationship, though, is the over-the-top, “we don’t care if we look cringe” exuberance of it all. Just look at G Flip teaching Stause how to use their drum set.

Queer romance can look a million different ways, but one thing I see in Stause and G Flip is the excitement and joy of newly DTR-ing with your partner, mixed with the unique—if complex—freedom of being with someone who really sees you for you. (Some LGBTQ+ people experience these feelings when they come out, whether that’s at 12 or 25 or 60.) I’m going to feel very stupid about this if they break up in two weeks, but for now let me love their love in peace!
