Dr. Sheth recommends paying attention to the shoe's pitch, which is the incline that connects the heel to the ball of the foot. The steeper the pitch, the more pressure you'll be forced to put on the ball of your foot. And a shoe's "upper"—the portion that covers the top of your foot—will be more accommodating if it's made from a natural material like leather. "Anything synthetic won't give," Dr. Sheth says. One final feature to consider: the straps. "Anything that goes around your ankle in particular is good," Dr. Sheth says. "It's a little more security."
